Rescue Me’s fourth season is promising to be even more intense and emotional, judging from Starpulse.com’s recent interview with cast member, Andrea Roth. The 39-year old actress, who plays Janet Gavin, estranged wife of Denis Leary’s character, Tommy, on the series, spoke about upcoming plots and reflected on her controversial sex scene last season.
One of Rescue Me’s highlights is the seesaw, love-hate relationship between Tommy and Janet. Their already fragile union was further aggravated by the tragedy of 9-11, which eventually resulted in their separation and imminent divorce. Last season, the two found themselves in an explosive sexual encounter reflective of the complexities in their relationship.
The scene elicited much controversy because Janet seemed to take pleasure in the encounter despite the fact that it was anything but consensual. Many critics took it as a sign that the show was oblivious to the concept of rape but Roth countered this in her conversation with Starpulse.com.
“I stand by that scene. I’m very proud of it. I thought it was a very complex and highly psychological scene between two very dysfunctional human beings. Some people found that scene sexy, including women,” Andrea Roth said.
When pressed for details on what lies in store for the couple, the actress did allude to something big set to take place between the two of them. “It’s the darkest, craziest thing he has ever done on our show … He does something horrible to me,” Roth declared.
Despite her declaration, the Rescue Me star also admitted that she does not really know for sure what will happen to Tommy and Janet. All she can do is remain optimistic about the future of the characters. “I think there is always hope for the two of them. They somehow both hold on to how good it once was. Who knows, maybe this year the big ending finale might not be drama with [Janet],” Roth said.
