Reagen Kulseth and Jackie Howell founded SAFE in 2002, in Tucson AZ because as Reagen put it, “No one group can do it all. It’s an unmanageable and daunting problem that needs as many people who are willing to get involved to help.” Reagen and Jackie founded this rescue group to make a difference in saving the lives of cats and dogs that were unlikely to be adopted by regular channels. Their mission is simply to find permanent homes for unwanted animals.
They are a non-profit organization with no facility. They are supported solely on donations and adoption fees- cats are $95 and dogs/puppies are between $125-150 to adopt. They use foster care volunteers to provide loving homes and care for the animals they rescue until they find forever homes for them. By not having the overhead of a facility, they are able to use all of the money they receive directly for the care of their animals. The money they receive goes towards medical bills mostly, to help heal the sick and wounded animals they rescue. Donations and adoption fees also fund spay and neuter procedures, as well as micro chipping, feeding and vaccinations on all of their cats and dogs. The economy has a significant impact on how many animals they can help because without donations and adoption fees they cannot do much. They spend close to $5000 a month just on veterinarian bills.

They rescue and adopt out 200-300 cats and dogs annually as well as one bunny and a ferret that needed a little help. They currently have ten full time active foster care volunteers who do most of the work and foster care for the animals they rescue. They also have an additional thirty foster volunteers approximately, who in most cases have ended up adopting the pets they have fostered.
How can we help? Adopt a cat or dog to support the efforts of no-kill animal rescues. Or volunteer to be a foster care home for an animal in need. Foster care volunteers are willing to take in an animal who may need training, medical care and some extra TLC. The ideal foster care candidate is someone who can be patient and understanding, consistent and responsible for the care and rehabilitation of the animals in their care. Foster care for animals provides them a safe and loving home and any health care needs while they are awaiting placement in their forever homes. It provides a lifesustaining service to an animal in need.
There are many animal rescues out there that are easy to find on the internet. It doesn’t matter where or with what organization you get involved with as long as you are involved in helping with the solution and not the problem. Remember to spay and neuter your pets and adopt or rescue pets rather than buying them from a breeder or pet store.
