One evening as my husband and I were enjoying our dinner on the beach, someone yelled that a puppy, around 4 weeks old, had been left in someone’s shoe on the sand. We all got up to see this little puppy who was so lethargic and scared, she hardly blinked or turned her head. We gathered her up and nestled her close to our chest as she was scared and there was no response to the water or food we gave her. About 6 of us kept taking turns to try and bring this little one back to being herself and feeling secure and loved. We did not know what to do with her and where to put her, as we are all renters at the hotel and it is forbidden to have animals.
After much consideration we thought of a couple who live down here 5 months out of the year. They live in their own home on the beach and have recently lost their dog as a result of a brain tumor. When they saw her they were so elated and brought her up to their home. They still have her and plan on taking her back to the states after she gets her shots. It is now 3 weeks that they have her and she is the most adorable puppy you would ever want to see. They named her “Haiti”, as she was found a day after the earthquake. If you were to see her now, she is such a happy puppy, gaining weight, frolicking on the beach and just making everyone smile.
How can anyone abuse an animal knowingly and not feel any remorse? It is something that I can never understand. Try to find it a home or bring it to a shelter if there is one, but do not leave it unattended and subject to harm. Check out the website for animal shelters near you. Give an animal a chance of a happy life and the comfort of a warm and loving environment.
